VA North Texas Health Care System
NVWG Sponsorship Breakfast
Business leaders and community officials from the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex gathered November 18, 2014, to honor wheelchair Veteran athletes and announce sponsorship opportunities for the upcoming 35th annual National Veterans Wheelchair Games (NVWG). The event took place in the David B. Miller Champions Club at Southern Methodist University.
Angela Nix, Administrator for VA North Texas Health Care System, Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center at Bonham welcomed the crowd with opening remarks, thanking the sponsors and guests for their support and attendance.
"The Games changed my life, I am stronger now than I have ever been because of the Games" said Patricia LaBar, an Army wheelchair Veteran athlete. During her speech, LaBar gave a touching account of her first experience as a participant at the NVWG. She discussed her emotional and physical transformation and directly credited the NVWG program.
Jacob Schick, Warrior Relations Specialist with the Brain Performance Institute's Warrior Training Team was the honorary special guest speaker. Schick's passion lies in helping his fellow comrades regain their drive and determination in order for them to get back on their feet. "I knew my injury was going to test my mental strength, and that is what I do for my fellow Veterans, that is what the Games can do for them." Says Schick. It is apparent, that Schick has a profound impact on everyone he meets. National Sponsors also had encouraging words in support of this program. UPS for example has been a National Sponsor of the Games since 1982 and Invacare, who has been on board as a sponsor since the very first NVWG in 1979.
The local NVWG Sponsorship Team is currently recruiting North Texas businesses interested in supporting the 2015 NVWG. More than just a sports competition, the Wheelchair Games are a comprehensive rehabilitation program designed to promote health, independence and active living through sports and recreation for Veterans with spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, amputations and other neurological conditions. Sponsorship contribution will directly impact the estimated 620 disabled Veterans expected to compete in the 2015 Wheelchair Games in Dallas.
