VA North Texas Celebrates National Salute to Veterans Week

Miss Southlake Cristi Kibler with Veteran
Saturday, February 12, 2011

VA North Texas is proud to host one of the most anticipated events of the year, National Salute to Veterans Week. This week commemorates the service of the men and women Veterans who served our country. Dallas, Bonham and Fort Worth VA facilities have planned a week packed with entertainment, VIP visits and fun-filled activities to show much appreciation to Veterans.

National Salute to Veterans Week begins on Monday, February 14 and concludes on Friday, February 18. Since this year’s celebration begins on Valentine’s Day, Veterans will enjoy either hand-delivered or mailed valentine cards from school children in the community.

Bands, dancers and musicians have practiced until perfection so Veterans and onlookers can enjoy their harmonious sounds and rhythm. Politicians and pageant beauties set aside time from their busy schedules to show their thanks as well.

Dallas VA events include visits from many local celebrities, including the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, public figures, schools, churches and other community organizations. Congressman Sam Johnson and staff from Senator John Cornyn’s and Congressman Jeb Hensarling’s offices are among the guests participating in this year’s celebration.

All facilities will collect and distribute valentine cards to Veterans. Each of the facilities will also host the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, and guests in Bonham include DAV (Disabled American Veterans), American Legion and Daughters of the American Revolution.

There are still plenty opportunities available at VA North Texas facilities for anyone desiring to join the salute. Chief Voluntary Service Bobbie K. Scoggins says people in the community are encouraged to come and let Veterans know they are not forgotten and that their service to our country is appreciated.

Individuals or groups wishing to participate in the National Salute program in Dallas should call Voluntary Service offices at Dallas VA Medical Center, 214-857-0428; Fort Worth Outpatient Clinic, 817-730-0078; or Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center in Bonham, 903-583-6282.
