VA North Texas Health Care System
Relax, Refresh, Rejuvenate to Care for Veterans
From the vigorous movements of kickboxing to the peaceful meditations of Tai chi, employees are finding ways to relax, refresh and rejuvenate during the workday. What began as a spontaneous moment in the Employee Wellness Center at Dallas VA, is now a welcome addition to an active wellness program.
The center now offers a variety of classes and sessions aimed to educate about the benefits of exercise and to promote overall health and wellness. Employees can participate in martial arts that include kickboxing, yoga and a new favorite, Tai chi. While kickboxing is best known for its forceful movements that help increase adrenalin and boost metabolism, both yoga and Tai chi are serene forms of exercise that help reduce stress and promote relaxation. No matter what the level of expertise, the beginner and enthusiast alike can have their personal goals fulfilled.
Mark Moore, a recreation coordinator at Dallas VA, says he and others are excited to have these new options included in the wellness program. The center hopes to increase attendance by spreading the word and letting everyone know how quick and convenient it is to attend a session. As an added benefit…most of the sessions, including Tai chi, are low impact and can be done in regular work clothes, eliminating the extra time it takes to change into exercise gear, shower and redress.
Employees can participate in different sessions offered weekly in Employee Wellness. Since starting the martial arts program, Moore has seen a noticeable count of employees who enjoy the quick 30- minute sessions on their lunch breaks. Many have expressed they love being able to rejuvenate and refresh during the hustle and bustle of the day.
