Internal Medicine PGY1 Rotation Description

To provide an experience that will improve upon the resident's knowledge base and pharmacotherapeutic skills in providing care for veterans admitted to the internal medicine team.

There are currently four internal medicine teams that admit patients every four days in which the pharmacy resident would be assigned to one of those teams. The pharmacy resident may also have the opportunity to provide care to post-surgical patients in the acute care setting.  Under the guidance of the preceptor, the pharmacy resident is expected to provide extensive pharmaceutical care for these patients, including recommendations to optimize medication regimens, drug information services, therapeutic drug monitoring, and patient counseling, as well as educating team members.

Pharmacy residents will be required to participate in topic discussions that are held several times per week and also to lead at least one topic discussion.  The topic discussions include a wide variety of commonly encountered disease states.
