Infectious Disease/Antibiotic Stewardship

The Infectious Disease/Antibiotic Stewardship rotation will introduce the resident to pharmacotherapy services intended to improve antimicrobial usage throughout the hospital.  Residents will work closely with the Advanced Practice Pharmacist – Infectious Diseases on projects such as drug use guidelines and clinical pathways to streamline the antibiotic stewardship efforts. Daily responsibilities include targeted therapy evaluations for patients on antimicrobials. After their review, residents meet with their Pharm.D. preceptor for "pharmacy rounds" each day to discuss the resident's therapeutic plan for each patient.  The resident will impact patient care through recommendations on the selection and modification of antimicrobial therapy.  Residents will become familiar with literature related to developing and implementing an antibiotic stewardship programs as well as therapeutic guidelines for disease states they encounter.  The goal is for the resident to be comfortable designing/redesigning a therapeutic plan and defining desired outcomes for a variety of Infectious Disease related issues by the end of the rotation.
