VA2K Walk and Roll event promotes employee wellness, helps homeless Veterans

May 13, 2013

DALLAS – VA North Texas Health Care System will host a 2K "Walk and Roll" event on May 15, at noon at Dallas VA Medical Center to coincide with National Employee Health and Fitness Day and to support homeless Veterans.

"Worksite wellness activities enhance employee engagement and contribute to a more productive and healthy workforce,"  said Jeffery Milligan, director of VA North Texas Health Care System. "VA's 2K gives us the opportunity to not only promote employee wellness, but also to collect donations to support homeless Veterans."

The event at Dallas VA Medical Center is just one of many 2Ks taking place May 15 at other VA facilities across the country. In conjunction with the event, our Voluntary Services office will inform participants of VA's willingness to accept non-monetary donations to be used to carry out existing VA programs for homeless Veterans. There is no requirement to donate in order to participate, but for anyone making donations, the following items are most needed to support homeless Veterans:

Clothing: socks and underwear; General: back packs, gift cards, hygiene kits, phone cards, toiletries; Household Items: blankets, brooms, cleaning supplies, coffee pots, cups, dish drainers, dish towels, dishwashing liquid, food storage containers, laundry baskets, laundry soap, mops, pillows, plates, pots, sheets, shower curtains, skillets, toasters, towels (bath and hand), tumblers, utensils.

The 2K will be held at Dallas VA Medical Center, 4500 S. Lancaster Rd. Dallas, TX 75216. The starting point is at the Avenue of Flags. Pre-registration is not required and those interested in participating should plan to arrive at 11:45 a.m. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be postponed to a later date to be determined. For additional information and more event details, please contact Public Affairs at 214-857-1155 or ntxpublicaffairs@va.gov.

Media planning to attend will have the opportunity to obtain footage and interview personnel involved in the event. Prior to arrival, media should call 214-707-8489 for parking instructions.

VA's employee wellness program is known as WIN (Wellness is Now). WIN empowers employees with the knowledge, skills and tools they need to create a culture of health and wellness. Furthermore, WIN encourages employees to use their appreciation of wellness to inspire Veterans to live healthier lifestyles. WIN integrates traditional occupational safety and health programs with health promotion activities, addressing both workplace and worker health and helping VA employees to do their important work of serving the Nation's Veterans.
