VA2K Walk and Roll event promotes employee wellness, helps homeless Veterans - VA North Texas Health Care System will host a 2K "Walk and Roll" event on May 15, at noon at Dallas VA Medical Center to coincide with National Employee Health and Fitness Day and to support homeless Veterans. VA Launches Hotline for Women Veterans 1-855-VA-WOMEN (1-855-829-6636) - The Department of Veterans Affairs has launched a new hotline, 1-855-VA-WOMEN, to receive and respond to questions from Veterans, their families and caregivers about the many VA services and resources available to women Veterans. General surprises World War II Veteran - Brigadier General Tom L. Daniels, U.S. Air Force (Retired), paid a surprise visit to a patient at Dallas VA Medical Center. The patient, Mary E. Walton, RN, is a 93-year-old World War II Veteran and the first black nurse from Dallas to enlist in the U.S. Army. (03/20/2013)

Hope for a cure is now a reality for patients with Hepatitis C - Hepatitis C is a deadly disease, but the good news is, there is a possible cure. An estimated 6,000-10,000 Veterans in North Texas may have Hepatitis C and either don't know it or are hesitant about receiving education about the disease or initiating therapy. Hope for a cure is now a reality for patients at Dallas Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. (03/19/2013)

VA to Host 22nd Anniversary Regional Veterans Day Celebration at Warrior Stadium - Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center and the City of Bonham will host the 22nd Annual Regional Veterans Day Program, Thursday, November 8, 9:30 a.m., at the Bonham High School Warrior football stadium. (11/06/2012)

Dallas VA Medical Center Welcomes the Public to Annual Community Health Fair - VA North Texas Health Care System will host its 23rd Annual Community Health Fair Saturday, November 3, at Dallas VA Medical Center located at 4500 S. Lancaster Rd. The event will be held in the Atrium from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (10/19/2012)

VA North Texas Health Care System to Host Homeless Veterans Stand Down - It is estimated that 12 percent of America's homeless are Veterans, and the VA North Texas Health Care System Homeless Veterans Outreach program is partnering with Homeless Veterans Services of Dallas, Inc. to provide a stand down event for homeless Veterans in the Dallas area. The event is scheduled October 26, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., at the Veterans Resource Center near Dallas VA Medical Center at 4900 S. Lancaster Rd. in Dallas with opening ceremonies at 8:30 a.m. Homeless Veterans are encouraged to attend and bring documentation when possible of their Veteran status such as a VA letter, Veterans photo ID or military DD-214. VA Encourages Veterans to Get Their Flu Shot - DALLAS – Flu shots are now available and VA North Texas Health Care System is reminding all Veteran patients to get protection from the flu virus. As with last year’s vaccine, it only takes one shot to protect against the seasonal flu and H1N1 (swine flu). Flu season brings an increased opportunity of illness for many individuals, and more than 200,000 people in the United States are hospitalized every year from flu complications. Everyone, especially high risk groups, including the elderly and people with certain health conditions should receive a flu vaccination each year. (09/13/2012)

Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center to Host Homeless Veterans Stand Down - Sherman – The VA North Texas Health Care System Homeless Veterans Outreach program is partnering with Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center in Bonham, Salvation Army of Sherman and Four Rivers Outreach, Inc. to provide a stand down event for homeless Veterans in the Texoma area. The event is scheduled September 20, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Four Rivers Outreach, Inc. located at 210 S. Rusk St. in Sherman. Homeless Veterans are encouraged to attend and bring documentation when possible of their Veteran status such as a letter, Veterans photo ID, or military DD-214. (09/04/2012)

Medical Foster Home Program Offers Alternative to Nursing Home - DALLAS – There is program for Veterans that offers a loving home with a caretaker instead of a long-term care facility. VA North Texas Health Care System has had great success with its Medical Foster Home program, offering a safe, long-term, home-like environment and an economical housing alternative for Veterans who are unable to remain in their own homes because of health issues. Fort Worth VA Outpatient Clinic Celebrates its Volunteers - Volunteers at Fort Worth VA Outpatient Clinic (FWOPC) were honored recently as VA celebrated National Volunteer Week. Guests were entertained during a Hollywood celebration at Goodwill Industries which featured contributions and service hours of Fort Worth VA volunteers. (04/30/2012)

VA North Texas Welcomes Peter Dancy as Associate Director - Peter Dancy, FACHE, was appointed associate director of VA North Texas Health Care System on March 25. Dancy is responsible for administration of logistics, engineering, human resources, pharmacy, prosthetics, health information management and fiscal services for the second largest VA system in the nation. VA North Texas provides care to more than 111,000 unique patients, with 1.4 million outpatient visits. With an annual operating budget of $868.9 million, the system has a staff of over 4,600 and more than 1,700 volunteers. (04/26/2012)

Dallas VA Psychologist Wins Award for PTSD Research - The American Academy of Clinical Psychiatrists (AACP) 2012 George Winokur Research Award was presented to Alina Suris, PhD, ABPP, for research that was published in the Annals of Clinical Psychiatry last year. Dr. Suris received the award at the AACP annual conference in March. (04/19/2012)

VA Salutes Female Veterans during Women's History Month - Are there any women today that represent progress and significant historical contributions more than those returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? This generation of women veterans has lived the historical turning point for women's involvement in U.S. military operations, having served as part of the largest group of female soldiers in the nation's history, in more varied roles and with more experiences. Bonham VA Celebrates Black History Month - BONHAM – Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center will observe Black History Month with a tribute to African American history through movement and song on February 23 at 12 p.m. in the auditorium. Feature performances of African, modern, and liturgical dances by the University of North Texas theatre department will provide an entertaining perspective on the evolution of African American culture. VA Medical Center Invites Community to "Salute Veterans" - DALLAS – Dallas VA Medical Center invites the public to participate in open house activities February 13-17 during National Salute to Veteran Patients Week. "National Salute to Veteran Patients gives everyone a chance to let those know who have given so much to our nation that they are not forgotten," said Director Jeffery L. Milligan. VA’s Renovated Inpatient Unit to Change the Look and Feel of Hospitalization - The recently renovated 16-bed medical unit on 7C successfully combines the latest technological interventions in health care with a serene patient-centered environment that culminates in a positive atmosphere primed for the provision of excellent care. VA Technology Improving Access to Care for Tyler Area Veterans - Now Veterans in rural areas and others who may experience complications with traveling to Dallas have access to the VA care they have earned, closer to home. That's where Telehealth comes in. Telehealth is an effective tool that facilitates the delivery of health care when the human touch of medical providers may not be needed. (12/29/2011)

How Common is the Occurrence between PTSD and Depression – Are Veterans at Risk? - Depression is one of the most commonly occurring disorders in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In fact, studies show that among people who have or have had a diagnosis of PTSD, approximately 48 percent also had current or past depression. Veterans who have had PTSD at some point in their life are almost seven times as likely to also have depression as people without PTSD. (12/23/2011)

VA North Texas Health Care System Awarded Accreditation from the Joint Commission - By demonstrating compliance with national standards for health care quality and safety, VA North Texas Health Care System earned accreditation from the Joint Commission. VA North Texas consists of four health care facilities located at Dallas, Bonham, Fort Worth, and Tyler, including an annex clinic located near Dallas VA and six community-based outpatient clinics throughout its 40-county service area. HUD, VA Grants Going to North Texas Public Housing Agencies - Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki has announced the award of 175 vouchers to public housing agencies in four North Texas cities to supply permanent housing and case management for the state’s homeless Veterans. (08/25/2011)

VA North Texas Health Care System to Get New Director - Jeffery Milligan, director of the VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System, has been selected to become the new director of the VA North Texas Health Care System – the second largest VA health care system in the Nation. Milligan will assume his new responsibilities at a date yet to be announced. (08/11/2011)

VA North Texas Deputy Chief of Staff Receives Air Force Association Award - Stephen Holt, MD, MPH, MSNRS, deputy chief of staff at VA North Texas Health Care System, has received the 2011 Department of Veterans Affairs Employee of the Year award from the Air Force Association. (07/19/2011)

Vietnam 'On-the-Ground' Combat Veterans Give Back - (BONHAM) Vietnam veterans who were boots on-the-ground in Vietnam are working on their first collaborative efforts with the U.S. Air Force 136 Airlift Wing to send care packages to Texas military units deployed overseas in support of OEF/OIF (Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom) service members. VA's Expanded Fort Worth Outpatient Clinic Open for Business - The expanded Fort Worth Outpatient Clinic is open for business at its new location at 2201 Southeast Loop 820, south of downtown Fort Worth. It is now the largest VA outpatient clinic in the nation. (11/19/2010)

VA Psychiatrist to Receive Prestigious Special Service Award - Carol S. North, MD, has been selected to receive the prestigious Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians special service award for 2010. She will receive the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians award on November 13 during the group's 54th annual convention and scientific program in San Antonio. (11/04/2010)

Dallas Homeless Veterans Stand Down Provides Relief and Hope - VA North Texas Health Care System is partnering with Homeless Veterans Services of Dallas, Inc. and Texas Veterans Commission to host a two-day event for the 19th Annual Homeless Veterans Stand Down at the Embarcadero Building, Dallas Fair Park, 1229 Admiral Nimitz Circle at Gate 3 on Thursday, November 4 and Friday, November 5, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The two-day event will provide information, resources, medical services, hope, employment opportunities, and needed winter garments to over 500 homeless veterans. VANTHCS Selected as Field Trial Site for DSM-5 Upcoming Manual's Proposed Criteria - VA (Veterans Affairs) North Texas Health Care System has been selected as one of seven adult field trial sites to test proposed diagnostic criteria for the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Used by health professionals around the world, DSM is the manual that provides descriptions, symptoms and other criteria for diagnosing mental disorders. (10/12/2010)

Dallas VA Medical Center Announces Winners of VHA Health Information Technology Initiative - Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Oncology nurses at VA North Texas Health Care System saw this need and began hosting National Cancer Survivors Day to celebrate life and remind cancer patients it is possible to have an active productive life. Dallas VA Medical Center Recognizes Research Week - The Research & Development program at Dallas VA Medical Center (VAMC) will celebrate Research Week May 18-19. This year's theme, "VA Research: 85 Years of Discovery, Innovation, and Advancements for Veterans" emphasizes the impact that research has on treating and preventing disease and disability for our nation's Veterans. Activities to take place in the atrium, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. will feature remarks on the future of research, presentations by local investigators on their advances in medical care, as well as a poster contest for trainees.
